If you have more than 100MB of data and you ned more than one connection for perfect random work, I would say default is no good. Postgres defaults are damn conservative and will crawl for 10K rows or something like that. I am sure same goes for mysql. But for a decent distro like mandrake, which sets SHMMAX to half the physical memory, it's like half the low hanging fruits aer already fetched.. But on RedHat it's fix 32MB which is absolute useless for anything serious..
