pppd starts - and then dies after a whole minute?  Likely it has not
been able to negotiate a connection.

Can you dialin from windows, with the terminal window displayed? (you can
do it in the dialup networking settings).  Check what you see there.

That is after you establish the ppp connection.

man inetd... you will find it is already installed.  If not there, man
xinetd (some newer distros - rh / mandrake variety - use xinetd)
