The version tag in bzImage is not at all necessary but I prefer it
because I often have number of kernel images in my system. If the tag
is there, it is easy to remember.

When kernel boots, it looks for System.map-<kernelversion> or
System.map file in "/" or in "/boot" directory. And if u have number
of kernels, it is always better to have version-ed System.map.
