Hello Gurus, I am having problem with kernel compilation for 2.4.18 (tar ball downloaded from kernel.org) in Slack8.
As per Readme in the sources I am extrzcting the sources in the /root/linux-2.2.18( I craeted this directory by hand) directory so I get my sources in /root/linux-2.4.18/linux. I do not craete the symlink linux in /usr/src which points to this .I do not know why it is needed in kernel compilation.But if so pl. enlighten me. Now I did make mrproper and them make menuconfig.So far so good. Then I did make dep and make clean. Then make and make install and make modules.Everything was OK. In make modules I think there was problem because it came out after copying few .o files to /lib/modules/2.4.18/pcmcia directory). I checked the contents of /lib/modules/2.2.19 with /lib/modules/2.4.18 and they were very much different. I am can not boot into this kernel. What could have gone wrong. Well I am still able to boot into my old kernel as I have preserved the .config,Syste.map and vmlinuxz files of my old kernel. Pl. let me know my mistake.
