i guess my question should have been how do you install fonts. n e way was
too stupid to google for it first. looks like i need to tweak the
/etc/X11/fs/config file to make it point to the path where the new fonts are
stored.

hmmm, that is a pity. i do hope that my friend is able to install a font that
works for him.
