philip,

your problem seems grave... :(

check your hdd.. if its a seagate hdd, you can
download software that checks drive integrity from the
seagate web site..

since u said its making a humming noise.. my first
guess is that your hdd is living on its final
breaths,... so backup as such as u can... u might lose
data on your ext partitions also

you also said that you're unable to boot from your
vfat partition.... gives the feeling that its
definately the hardware at fault... happens more
during the monsoons due to extreme humidity...
is this computer in a non-A/C room ?

to fix this problem u cud try the foll..

1) keep trying to mount the hdd.. using the hdd
continuously for 2-3 hours could heat it up and may be
u could access the partition after that.

if this fails...

2) run to a professional data recovery guy... get the
data copied to another hdd and then try formatting the
hdd in a single partition in ext2.. if u get errors
while formatting.. u know for certain that ur hdd is
dead.

all this, of course, means a lot of uninvited work
:(

good luck anyways....
satsco.
