Philip,

I had faced this problem earlier. It was a hardware problem.
This was on my P-75 with 1 Gig /dev/hda which had Win-98 and
Linux on /dev/hdb.

As Naren has correctly stated, the HDD had reached EOL. In
any case, I was able to recover 100% and transfer all data to
another HDD. I had followed the following steps:

o Pressed all cables and cards.
o Booted through Linux once and mounted hda. Shut down.
o Booted through a Win-98 boot floppy and did a scandisk on
the 32 bit partitions. It made a fair amount of repairs.
o Booted theough Linux and transferred the whole 1 Gig to
    hdb (Linux partition).
o Got a new drive for hda and replaced old one totally. Just
transferred to a 1 GB /dev/hda1 32 bit partition. (The new
hard disk had a larger capacity).
o Nothing lost. After recovering LILO on MBR, I could dual
    boot once again.

  HTH

expand is a filter that converts tabs to spaces. If tabs are
to be removed from a file, it is as simple as:
'$expand filename > newfilename'
