I think you are using a redhat distro, I dont know what the rescue mode is for in it, it has never rescued me anytime. I have tried in vain to access the HDD but no results, After booting through the rescue mode, it does not use the kernel residing in your HDD but it uses the kernel image on the CD, so you cannot access data on the HDD.
