I think not because the login screen does come up and he's able to login
as root. There could be a number of other reasons

/home partition got filled
/tmp got filled
misconfiguration in the window manager file ( try loggin in failsafe mode )
too restrictive permissions in /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess ( doesnt seem so,
otherwise there would be messages like cannot open display for user etc,
try loggin in as root and give xhost + localhost and then try as a normal
user)
