what kind of scsi card you have?
If the tape drive uses separate card(not separate channel, i mean it, if
it is a separate card) load the appropriate driver for it.
in my case I had Adaptec AIC-7899 Ultra 160/m SCSI host adapter
So I had to do it manually
modprobe aic7xxx
and
modprobe st
SO I would say you better have the scsi support for your kernel and load
the *necessary* modules
that should work for you.
Here is my log for my machine.
