In short I use amanda for my purpose at my place.

I would say it should be possible to use any of these tools, tar, cpio, 
dump/restore.

for tar it just easy say

    tar cjf /dev/st0 /home/dump/backup

it should write everything from /home/dump/backup directory to tape to 
extract

(cd /home/dump/restore; tar xjf /dev/st0 )

it should untar evewrything from tape

it is that easy.
