X alone would need 64MB+ of RAM for decent performace. Add to that the
bloat of kde/gnome, your pentium classic will crawl. Something lighter
like icewm, wmkaer, {black/flux/open}box, oroborus would be a better
bet.
On a related note, has tried XFCE with above specs? It is supposed to be
lean and mean. On my celeron 400 + 128MB ram it is good.
