I have a feeling he re-initialized his /var/lib/apt lists from a debian
CDROM... all this means is that he has a apt cache / other lists that
are out of step with his current install (happen he has been upgrading
his debian install over the net).

If he is using stock debian from the CD without any upgrades, apt-cdrom
add should work without any hassles.

I dont know debian, and wont be working on it ever, so this is just
guesswork - so I could well be wrong.
