The problem did originate when I tried to download some files from the
net. The /var/lib/apt lists got filled with so many links, that when
doing 'apt-get install' or 'apt-get remove' from the CDs, it threw up
screen-full of links which apt-get could not sync and requested for a
'apt-get upgrade'. To get over this, I deleted all the web links from
/var/lib/apt lists, and landed into the problem.

Yes, it did the work perfectly.
