it seams there is some trouble with ide-scsi emulation. first of all you 
should read cd-writing-howto very carefully. it deals with most of 
the issues regarding ide-scsi mode. second your /etc/fstab must 
reflect your settings in its entry. suppose you use /dev/scd0 and 
your /etc/fstab says /dev/hdc. Your desktop shortcuts should also 
reflect this. some distros do it automatically, some 
don't. check all those things. also do a 
cdrecord -scanbus
to see what is there.
