not much experience on this, especially on debian, but in gnome, when yu
don't select a screensaver [screensaver disabled], xscreensaver does not
start. thus yu can't lock your screen also. if yu select a screensaver,
then next time yu login, xscreensaver starts automatically. this is my
experience on mandrake 9.
