Problem is solved.
Created a file ~/.xsession containing two lines -
'xscreensaver &' and 'xfwm'.
I use kdm to log in and xfce window manager. Now when I login and start
my window manager with 'default', I get xfce with the screensaver
running in the background.

Thanks for the inputs and explanations.
Regards,
K.Ghosh.
