The steps as were involved are:
Connect USB pen drive
confirm device is recognized with: cdrecord -scanbus
mkdir /mnt/usbdrive
find drive device by: dmesg | grep "Mass" -3
look at the drive assigned (mine turned out to be sda1)
as SU: mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive
then: cd /mnt/usbdrive
