Sure, what's the problem with ACLs?  Use a new 2.6.0-test kernel, or
get the SGI kernel (with XFS support) from oss.sgi.com and happily use
ACLs till they're bursting out of your ears :)  ACLs are perfect to
solve a problem like yours.
