For loading  ntfs module,  there is no  need to  re-compile the
kernel. All stock kernels these days are compiled with loadable
module support.  Just use the  stock kernel from  RH-8, without
further tinkering, and  do an insmod for  /full/path/to/ntfs.o.
This  should  work.  The  ntfs   partition  should  be  mounted
read-only.
