u could also try an option of putting all ur critical
files on a read-only files system ( like a CD ) and
making the system access these files (like knoppix)
....

when u need to change the files replace the old CD
with the new one ...


As Sthitaprajna said .... u have to get the security
of the system tightened up .. no need to give the
users
root password ... refer to the site mentioned by
him...
