Hello,
I would like to share with you how I used linux in solving a
problem. In fact this has really impressed me about the power of
linux. I had brought the latest issue of Linuxforu magazine (December
2003 edition). I brought it mainly because it had the OpenOffice 1.1
which allows one to convert your documents to PDF. Both windows and
linux versions of the software were included in the CD. Since I use a
win98 machine at work, I was more interested in the windows version
of OpenOffice.I put the CD in the CD Drive and I was able to browse
the folders in win98. But when I tried to copy the setup files into
the harddisk, It showed a CD error and the copying got truncated.
Then I booted up linux, mounted the CD and tried coppying the setup
files into the FAT partition drive of my computer. Even though some
errors were shown on the console, I was able to copy the setup files
without any problem. What impressed me most was linux did not give up
even when there were errors. It kept trying till the task was
completed while win98 truncated the copying at the first instance of
getting an error.
To any body in this list associated with *Linuxforu* magazine
I feel that they should really check if their CD's have any errors
before shipping. This is the second time that it has happened to me (I
usually buy mags from the news stand) that I am getting a defective CD
with their mag. It is really bad publicity for Linuxforu mag. Also
they should concentrate more on carrying useful linux applications on
their CD's rather than different OSes.
thanks
Ravi
