Hello, This mail is in continuation of my earlier post under some other thread name. I am changing the thread name as I thought that this one would be the more appropriate one.
The server is running only Qmail, Squirrelmail and vexira. Not only the httpd is taking more than 90% of resources most of the time (I tried to upload the output of top but the list don't permit for obvious reasons), the apache stops responding as well sometimes. When it stops responding I have observed that Around 150 httpd processes are running as reported by ps -ef The command service httpd status tells that it is running The command service httpd stop tells that the stopping was OK but the log file shows that many httpd processes could not be stopped because they did not exist. The command service httpd start gives the error "(98)address already in use: make_sock could not bind to 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available shutting down" signifying that the earlier stoppage was not a clean one I am worried that something is not going right. But being a new user, don't have any clue really. Can somebody help me please? This locking up of httpd is occurring in every few days. BTW I am using courier IMAP and some of the mailboxes are a few MB large. Turn off the themes in squirrelmail. How big are the mailboxes in question? Are you using Courier IMAP, or something else? > not done any special tuning of the software. On Linux, top just reports from /proc, so reading the documentation on /proc will be useful as well. > Please help me to find the real problem.
