Do a killall -9 httpd and then start cleanly.  As you said, you already have
a httpd process running on that machine when you tried to start a new one.

What do your apache logs say, and can you correlate that with something in
your imap logs?

Should not be a problem with maildir - that's an one email per file, several
files to a directory type of mailbox.

Did you tune squirrelmail to use courier?  Squirrelmail has some settings
that are pre-defined for courier imap.

Oh, upgrade squirrelmail and php4 + mod_php.  And upgrade apache if that's
not been up2dated as yet.
