I am using Squirrelmail for checking my mails. Yesterday, I tried to access the same mails through pine. It was fine and pine listed all the contents of my inbox. But then when I tried to check my mail using Squirrelmail again. I found to my chagrin that all the mails in the inbox were deleted though I had not done so when I was accessing pine. I asked my system administrator to try it out and the same thing happened to him. What could be the problem? Does pine delete all the files from the inbox when it accesses it? (Doesn't sound logical though) And even if it deletes it, where do the files go?
If you don't tell it otherwise, pine moves the read mail to ~/mbox
