This is correct. When you started pine it read the
/var/spool/mail/"USER" and moved all mails to /home/"USER"/mbox file.
(~/mbox as guru's told you) Unless you gave some other path when you
setup pine. Try "updatedb" and then "locate mbox" go through the output.
