Hi,
I am about to setup a mail server in our department. Can you suggest which MTA to use? I am told exim can bounce mail at SMTP time? Cam postfix do the same?

exim, sendmail, postfix can all 5xx at smtp time

qmail is braindead enough to accept all mail and then generate a bounce afterwards - the smtpd process has no view of the userdb.

Some qmail zealots claim this is a "feature"

In this day and age, with all the forged spam around, generating bounces instead of a 5xx reject at smtp time is a bug and a gross design failure, not a feature.

It is a bug that will -

1. Eat up your bandwidth (see what happens when you get dictionary attacked)

2. Result in you wasting time trying to deliver bounces back to forged / spoofed sender addresses. If you 5xx at smtp time, it is the sending mail server / client's job to generate the bounce / error notification, not your mailserver's job.

So - "anything but qmail" is the answer to your question
