The first place to check (if you have a specific make/model in mind)
is http://www.linux-laptop.net/

A few companies are now selling pre-installed Linux based
laptops. IBM/Dell I think have a few models.

I have run/met people who run Linux on Sony Vaio, Dell Latitude, IBM
Thinkpad and Compaq/HP Presario models. Though there have been occassional
hiccups, in most cases things do work. Most often, complaints have been
of sound and modem.
