I was thinking of purchasing a laptop and was basically looking for something which is Linux compatible (which means that the sound card, network card and graphics atleast should work ). Has anyone used Linux on a laptop before ? What all do I need to keep in mind ? Any recommendations ?

You wont believe this, i posted this Q on this group a few months ago and one strong suggestion was to buy a Mac !!
I had never used one before and was very hesitant.
After discussions with many persons on various lists, I finally took the plunge and got a PowerBook G4. Its a great machine with a OSS *Nix called GNU-Darwin. Yes you can install Linux on it, even dual boot it. It uses the PowerPC architecture which almost all OS's have ported to. iBooks start at about 60K.

The hardware is great- great battery life, compatible with Bluetooth, Wifi Airport, Firewire 400, even Firewire 800 etc. Usually peripherals ship with a Mac OS X driver, so you dont have problems installing most things.

And oh yes, you wont need Fairplay, since you get iTunes with a Mac :-)
