Hi,
I am using Debian woody 3.0r2 with the default
2.2.22-ide-pci kernel. I tried using my Sony DSC P72
camera on the USB port, but usb directory was not
there in /proc/bus/. I thought the USB support might
not be there in the default kernel, so I recently
compiled 2.6.3 kernel.
When I try to boot from it, after lots of messages, I
get the following message and system gets into hung
state. However, if I choose the old 2.2.22 kernel of
woody 3.0r2 it boots fine.
I followed the normal steps of compiling the kernel
i.e
make xconfig
make dep (though this is not required in 2.6.x)
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install
-----------------<error>------------------------------
VFS: Cannot open root device "301" or
unknown-block(3,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown
block(3,1)
-----------------</error>------------------------------
Additionally, I would like to mention that:
(1.) I had built the EXT2 as a part of kernel and not
as a module.
(2.) The older kernel 2.2.22 still boots ok.
(3.) The line root=/dev/hda1 is present in lilo.conf
Please if someone can also answer the following
questions:
Does the default woody kernel comes with usb support?
Can I get the .config file for the default woody
kernel from some place, or is it within my system
somwwhere :-) ?
Regards.
