That should be it! Have never used knoppix, but usually (1.) and (3.)
are sufficient for booting of any new 2.4.x kernel.

But for loading the modules at startup you need to have the relevant
entries in /etc/modules.conf.
May be try copying the modules.conf itself or the parts you require
from /etc/modules.conf of the knoppix CD.
