The changes are necessiated by factors other than debian and
gaim. There are changes at yahoo end. Don't blame poor debian
for it ! The default gaim with most distros of woody vintage
would also be affected.

If yahoo messenger is very important for you use ymessenger
from the yahoo site. This is usually updated before any changes
are made on the yahoo messenger system. Otherwise, nothing
stopping you from compiling the source (or converting the
default binary rpm to deb) from gaim.sf.net and using it.

debian is totally a voluntary effort. It is remarkable how they
maintain the whole thing so well orchestrated as a co-
operative venture without drop in quality for so many years.
Quite a few distros like Knoppix and Corel (now Xandros) is
based on this enterprise. Their policy of forward enhancemnt
rather than retro-fit makes a lot of sense, when you view it in
totality. All security related issues are retro-fixed, usually
before most major distros. It is not for nothing that folk at
google and sourceforge run off thousands of debian servers ...

No distro sucks because yahoo messaging does not work ;-)

Just my unbiased view (a Slack/ LFS user) ...
