Hello Ravi,

I will give you a link from the University of Berkeley,California, that
will answer some of your doubts about Unix.

The link is:- http://math.berkeley.edu/~tinsel/mathunix/seminar1.html

Please also keep in mind the following:-

1. This is a Linux mailing list and not a Unix mailing list.

2. Please do a google search on "similarities between Unix and GNU/Linux"
or "differences between Unix and GNU/linux", and please learn to use
a search engine to find your answers before shooting questions to the list.

Now, Linux is just the kernel(www.kernel.org), of an operating system known
as GNU/Linux.The "Linux Kernel" was orginally developed by
Linus Benedict Trovalds at the University of Helsinki,Finland, because
he could not afford the commercial Unix operating systems variants that
were used at that point of time in the Helsinki University labs.

A kernel is only a small, but very crucial component of an operating
system. In computer science, the kernel is the fundamental part of an
operating system. It is piece of software that is responsible for
providing secure access to the machine's hardware to various computer
programs. It also performs tasks such as mutiplexing and harware
abstractions.

Linus Trovalds later released the "Linux Kernel" under the GNU General
Public Licence (GNU GPL). Today many volunteers worldwide contribute to
the "Linux Kernel" development.

GNU/Linux is an operating system(Kernel+GNU libraries+applications)
developed by the Free Software Foundation(www.gnu.org), founded by
Mr.Richard Matthew Stallman,(www.gnu.org) and which uses the
"Linux Kernel" for the GNU/Linux operating system.

The Free Software Foundation adopted the "Linux Kernel" as the kernel
for its GNU operating system now known as GNU/Linux only because
GNU/HURD the orginally proposed kernel of the GNU operating system is
not fit for day today use to this date. Work is still going on the "GNU/HURD
Kernel" to make it fully functional asap.

There is nothing as a "Linux Operating System",Linux is JUST the kernel
of the GNU/Linux operating system, the fully functional operating system is
called "GNU/Linux" giving respect that is due to the Free Software Foundation
for 20 years of hard work for making the GNU/Linux operating functional
as it is today.

Regards,

Vivek Varghese Cherian.
