Well you can't play a "DAT file" directly from the VCD, as it is not a regular file. Mplayer has a command-line option to playback VCDs. Read the mplayer documentation to know what that option is (use "man mplayer"). I'm not sure of this. ALSA (http://alsa-project.org/) supports a huge list of sound-cards. Yours might be supported. Newer kernel versions may also have the support. You'll have to scour the net for hardware compatibilty for that.
