Dear List, My aim is to get Debian Unstable (Sarge?) on my computer. I cannot get hold of the Sarge installation CD's. However, I have high speed access to the APT archive (~2 MBps) at ftp.iitm.ac.in.
Debian Unstable is "SID" and will always remain the same. Sarge is presently into testing and will soon become the next big stable release. iitm archives seem almost dead to me. Try the installation with a network iso image from Debian. It works and rocks.
I tried the network install using floppies, but my hard disk was not detected. So, I stopped trying. I then got hold of Knoppix 3.3, and installed it onto my hard disk.
Knoppix isn't Debian. It'a a derivative. Try using knoppix only to find out the hardware modules that it uses. Prefer native Debian installation. Knoppix has it's own init script which has a dependency on many vital base packages. Hence, installing Knoppix and upgrading to sid can be very annoying.
