I presume you want a pop and/or imap server for your users to be able
to download their email.

This means that you will have to run a smtp (MTA) server.

I have used a RH 8.0 box to do the following things:
The local users were connecting to the sendmail/courier-imap to do mailing
amongst themselves. The sendmail server was configured to send all external
mails to the mail server of the ISP's server. I was using fetchmail to get
the external mails received at the ISP's mail server to put in my local
sendmail server. All the local users were connecting to the local sendmail
server for all mailing requirements. The machine was connected to the
Internet using Siffy broadband connection and was connected 24 hours.
Incidentally that box was also running squid to provide internet
connectivity to all the LAN users.
With regards,
Goutam
