I assume that sound was working with the 2.6.8-2 kernel you were using
earlier, and that you installed the alsa-modules-2.4.27-2 or so package
when you were downgrading the kernel to 2.4.27-2.  In case you installed
the alsa-modules package, check if you are hitting a debian bug where
the modules wouldn't load because of kernel module versioning issue.
