hi there,

i am having problems getting my NIC cards to talk to
each other.

In the minimal system, I installed 2 NE2000 compatible
NICS one on each of my 2 intel-pentium+RHLinux6.1
systems. I could get the kernel to recognize the 2
NICs in both cases (ifconfig gives "UP" status and
both are detected OK at boot time).

I have bound card 1 as:
IP : 192.168.0.2
Netmask : 255.255.255.0

and card 2 as:
Ip : 192.168.0.3
netmask : 255.255.255.0

<basically a SINGLE ethernet network with no routing)

BUT, I cant ping, telnet, ftp etc from one m/c to
another (using IP or names). I get a "no route to
host" error in telnet/ftp and "dest unreachable" in
ping.

ALL the three (ping/telnet/ftp) work when I connect
the 2 NICs within a single m/c but I suspect (?) the
packets dont travel "throu" the network but actually
behave as in a loopback interface.

Q1. what did i do wrong/miss ?
Q2. is there any way of checking whether the
NIC+cable+NIC is hardware-ok ? (ie the prob is with
faulty h/w and not with s/w or OS config)

Thanks in advance,

James.
