The core kernel code of Linux was written without any propreitary stuff in
it. Remember that many of the commercial unices (Sun OS, for example) are
based on code that was available openly from BSD. The BSD license lets you
take open code, make modifications to it and keep the modifications
propreitary. People like Stallman feel that this is not the best of
things. And there are others who feel that BSD-ish license is not as
draconian and business unfreidnly as GPL.
