I forgot to add one thing:

I say "without any propreitary stuff in it" and not "from scratch". The
BSD Compressiong stuff in the kernel, for example, comes from the BSD
effort.

% head /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/bsd_comp.c
/* Because this code is derived from the 4.3BSD compress source:

 * All rights reserved.
 *
 * This code is derived from software contributed to Berkeley by
 * James A. Woods, derived from original work by Spencer Thomas
 * and Joseph Orost.

I am not sure about the legal issues here. This is the case of a GPL
software having parts in it that are distributed under BSD license.

Manoj & Arun, I have a question (please followup in LIG). Can GPL code
contain BSD parts in it? Is it not true to say that the linux kernel is
"mostly distributed under GPL"?
