I've got an Ericsson I888 World phone, which works fine with whatever
(obviously not current) version of the irda-utils came with the SuSE
6.4 distribution I have on my laptop (an AST Ascentia GXM-A, which is
out of production - cute little subnotebook).
Incidentally, I bought an ACTiSYS dongle for it, not realizing the
notebook actually had IR built in, since there's exactly one sentence
in the entire manual about it, and there are several sentences about
other features that this particular model doesn't have. The phone worked
fine with the dongle, and worked fine with the built-in IR when I realized
it was there hidden next to the PCMCIA slot. :-) So I guess I'll hang
the dongle off my desktop box, and be able to beam memos to it from my
pilot.
What I *have* had a lot of trouble with is the service from my wireless
provider, Voicestream. They appear to have randomly turned off my
data service at least once, and their customer support is appalling.
Unfortunately, so far, they're the only GSM provider in the area (Boston).
The I888 is a really nice dual-band (US/Eurasia) phone. I'm not sure
Ericsson are selling it any more, though, and not sure what their recent
decision to outsource their manufacturing is going to do to quality of
their future offerings. (Hopefully not much.)
Anyway, FWIW, that's my experience.
