I have Inspiron 3500!!!! Wow...nice slow machine.

But my SIR works after many nights of short sleep. All the howtos seem either
out of date or does not fit all situations.

I use kernel 2.4.10-ac3. I built everything in modulus if possible. The
/etc/modulus.conf says:

pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias usb-interface usb-uhci
alias sound-slot-0 nm256
alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty
alias ppp0 off
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp0 ppp_generic
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

I have to setup the SIR in BIOS. Don't use automatic settings. Specify the
IRQ/PORT. You will need to remember that settings. When boots, it will say
sth like:

Serial.....
ttyS? Irq ... Port...
ttyS? Irq ... Port...

One of them is for the SIR. Edit /etc/sysconfig/irda (redhat or mandrake).
What you do next is to do a service irda start. It basically starts the
irattach with irattach /dev/ttyS? -s. If you run ifconfig, you should see
irda0 up.

I use irda to talk to my Visor Edge. I made a like from /dev/ircomm0 to
/dev/pilot. The polit-link works. BUT IT IS VERY SLOW!!!! Although it says
setting speed 115200. But the throughput is like <1kB/sec. The same SIR works
much faster in WindowsXP.

Well...not perfect, but it is working. I managed to get PPP going between my
latop and palm too. Tried ptelnet...but it is too slow.

Anyway...good luck.
