I'm not sure, but I think you should set the io/dma it uses in 
smc-ircc.c before insmoding it:

There is a line:
static unsigned int io2[] = { 0x100, 0x3e8, 0x2e8, 5};

I believe that the first 3 parameters are the ios probed by the smc
module, while the fourth is the dma it uses. I put 5 because is what I
believe your lspnp displays.

You should then recompile the modules.


ps: Now, I am almost sure that my Armada 1700 6233/T/4000/D/M/1, while
said by Compaq that it has FIR, does not. I'm thinking of opening the
notebook to take a look at the controller chip, but there is too many
things I should remove (CD drive, display, etc) to get to the mother
board. All FIR chips report something via PnP, or some older ones do not?
Also, I can find no info on the supposed FDC37C951A that it contains on
the smc web/ftp site. This is what the Compaq FIR inf driver file
mentions. I wish you luck, I didn't have it. :)
