You need to specify the transceiver to use, since it doesn't follow the
auto-probing rules. The Thinkpad uses the IBM31T1100, so you can try that
one first:

modprobe nsc-ircc dongle_id=0x09

or add to /etc/conf.modules:

options nsc-ircc dongle_id=0x09

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to try some other transceiver. Maybe
HP HSDL-1100/HSDL-2100 (dongle_id=0x0d). Hope this will help you. Please
tell us if you can make it work, so we can make a register of laptops and
which transceiver they are using.
