  I don't know about your error message; maybe trying another distribution
(e.g. Debian starts from 5 floppies), to see if the message is the same.

  For the laptop, maybe you could try booting from the tomsrtbt distribution,
which holds in one (!) floppy and has pcmcia support. http://www.toms.net/rb/.
