You should also take a squint at your /etc/lilo.conf file next time you're
booted up from floppy.  Make real sure it is really correct about your
root, the kernel names, etc.  Then run /sbin/lilo to update your boot
loader. I had the same problem (can't open initial console) and this
attention to lilo cleared it up.  Etiology:  I deleted my linux partitions
and re-installed without also deleting lilo. It kept my old boot info
(kernel names, root partition, etc) -- v-e-r-y ugly thing to try and boot a
new installation from.  And it apparently keeps RH5.1 installer from being
able to re-install lilo in the MBR during an 'install everything' install.
yes virginia, there is a lilo -uninstall flag (or maybe it is lilo -remove,
whatever, find it now, use it when you re-install). There's at least two
lilo man pages (lilo.conf and lilo) to help with the details.  My
experience is with RH5.1, your mileage may vary.
