I use /dev/modem, soft-linked (ln -s) to /dev/tty0s; also, I have to set
chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0 to make it easier for regular users to talk to the
modem. (Only 2 users, so there's very little likelihood of malicious
waggling of control lines.)

Here are my settings (Tosh 4020):-

# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  product info: "Toshiba America", "3CXM056-BNW", "3COM/NoteWorthy 56K
Modem"
  manfid: 0x0101, 0x002f
  function: 2 (serial)

# cardctl config
Socket 0:
  Vcc = 5.0, Vpp1 = 0.0, Vpp2 = 0.0
  Interface type is memory and I/O
  IRQ 3 is exclusive, level mode, enabled
  Speaker output is enabled
  Function 0:
    Config register base = 0x0300
      Option = 0x60, status = 0x08
    I/O window 1: 0x03f8 to 0x03ff, 8 bit

Hope this helps. :)
