pb> me and a friend of mine both use redhat 6.0 on a toshiba 320 CDT
pb> with a xircom realport ethernet and modem adaptor. the problem is
pb> this: we use this thing a the university on the network, but for
pb> getting an ip-adress we have to connect to a dhcp server (NT) With
pb> me it works properly, this NT server matches MAC adress and
pb> hostname to give you an IP. With this friend of mine we seem to
pb> have made all the proper settings, using netcfg, but it doesn't
pb> work, I get an IP just by turning on my computer and booting linux
pb> , he has to run ifup eth0 to get his IP. Does anyone know what we
pb> are doing wrong here, we want to get this IP at boot..... so you
pb> don't have to login as root to run the ifup command......?

Two things to try...

1. Look at /etc/sysconfig/network and make sure there is a line that
says "NETWORKING=yes". This is sort of the master on/off switch for
networking for the /etc/rc.d/* scripts.

2. RH 6.0 does indeed use /sbin/pump instead of dhcpcd for the DHCP
client. Not actually understanding that, I was having a ton on random
problems getting my DHCP to work properly after reboot, after resume,
after PCMCIA card eject/insert, etc. Although RH 6.0 errata don't
mention anything like the problems I was having, there is an updated
RPM for "pump" on their errata site. I installed it and my problems
instantly vanished. (You might think that this would either apply to
both of you or to neither, but it might also be configuration
dependent. So, the questions you both answered independently long,
long ago when installing/upgrading RH 6.0 might have been answered
slightly differently. Unfortunately, these days this can lead to a
Microsoftification of your configuration.)
