What always goes wrong when I install X, is that all modes are
removed because the horizontal and vertical frequency ranges of
the monitor are specified incorrectly. Does the X server say
something like "mode 800x600 needs freq of 47kHz, removed"?
Adjusting these ranges usually did the trick for me.

Should work with the newest xfree-svga server. I use 3.3.3.1-0
(from debian 2.1) on my brand new acer travelmate 512t, which
uses the 256AV chip set.
