I don't know if this can apply to you, but try following the "X Windows"
section on the "Linux on a Dell Inspiron 7000 Laptop"
(http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/) page. The Inspiron 7000 that
I have also has a ATI Rage Pro LT and I used a modified version of the
XFree86 Mach64 that uses the kernel's framebuffering support.
